Art, culture and the finest musical gems: MS Dockville Festival

Enjoy the late August sun right in the beautiful city of Hamburg on a meadow where sheep once grazed. This disused industrial site in Wilhemsburg, surrounded by the harbour’s cranes, containers and warehouses, is home to a real treat: the music and arts festival MS Dockville

A festival in the worldly harbour city of Hamburg can only mean one thing - true gems and treasures. That’s why MS Dockville doesn’t feature the big names everyone already knows, but fresh and exciting international newcomers such as Olly Schulz, First Aid Kit, The Blaze and Oscar and the Wolf.

Weeks before the musical truffles from all corners of the globe hit the many small and large stages at MS Dockville, artists and art collectives from a range of countries meet on site to create works of art based on a meta topic. The poetic installations, graffiti and performances will be shown during the two-week MS Artville Festival - an ever-larger open air gallery event held right before the music festival - as well as during the MS Dockville - spread across the entire festival site. And lastly, there is one final characteristic that makes this festival so unique: the combination of the industrial harbour backdrop and the urban flair.

Even though the festival takes place in the centre of Hamburg, there’s on-site camping as well - with showers and ceramic toilets. Unfortunately, we don’t have room for caravans. All those who aren’t too keen on camping can benefit from Hamburg’s many other types of accommodation.
There’s a regular MS Dockville shuttle bus service from Veddel S-Bahn station (8 minutes from the central station), but there’s an even nicer and more sustainable way to reach the festival through the old Elbtunnel. That’s why you can park your bike for free right next to the site - and, for just 2 euros, there’s also a guarded “bike cloakroom”.

Prepare for everything when packing your bags - a stiff breeze, beautiful sunshine or a cold shower: the weather up north is as wild as it is unpredictable. The style at MS Dockville is easier to predict: Nordic and urban. Sneakers, caps, laid-back shirts, cool prints, track jackets and raincoats. Anything goes as long as your look is as cool as the surroundings - with a hint of self-deprecation and a flurry of understatement.
