Ones2Watch: Arlissa

Arlissa was signed to London Records, then to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation and broke through with a duet with rapper Nas when she was only 19. She teamed up with London house duo Touch Love for one of the summer’s biggest anthems ‘Touch’. Time to meet her for a quick #Ones2Watch Q&A...

Tell us about your musical background!

I always knew I wanted to be a singer since I was a lil cradle baby. My next door neighbour was a songwriter and he came round to our house once when I was 15. I used that as my opportunity to sing and see if he thought I was good enough; he did and he helped me become a better songwriter.

What was your breakthrough?

One day my friends had been making a track and asked for my help so we wrote a demo together. It was originally for another singer but apparently when Nas got a hold of it, he thought my voice was interesting and wanted it to stay! I honestly couldn't believe it. Two weeks later I was shooting the video with Nas. It was definitely swimming in the deep end but I had the best time. It was through that where Roc became involved.

You have recently collaborated with Tough Love on the summer anthem ‘Touch’ but what´s next?

I've been recording my album, and I have a couple of other sneaky features coming out too before then. There's a lot of exciting things happening but I don't want to jinx it so I'm gonna keep hush hush right now and end with a winky face.
